Leading the Way in Sustainability: Tamil Nadu's Rainwater Harvesting Law Inspired by The Rain Centre
Tamil Nadu's Rainwater Harvesting Law Inspired by The Rain Centre
One of our major achievements has been our successful advocacy for the mandatory implementation of RWH in both old and new buildings in Tamil Nadu. In fact, our state is the only one in India to have enacted such a law. The widespread adoption of RWH in Tamil Nadu has led to a significant increase in groundwater levels in Chennai rising by 6-8 meters and remaining stable for the past seven years.
Sharing Expertise on Rainwater Harvesting with the World
Our efforts have also inspired other countries to adopt RWH measures. The Director of the Rain Centre was invited to both Sri Lanka and Japan to share his experiences in promoting rainwater harvesting (RWH) in urban areas.
In June 2004, he was invited to present a paper on RWH at a seminar in Sri Lanka and was asked to advise the Sri Lankan government on the need to establish a Rain Centre in Colombo and to legislate RWH. The Sri Lankan government set up a Rain Centre in Colombo and made RWH mandatory for all new buildings, following the success of our initiatives in Tamil Nadu. In August 2005, the Director was invited to Japan as the only participant from India to present two papers at the Tokyo Asia Pacific Skywater Forum held in Sumida City, Tokyo.
